Promote Yourself & Your Business Newsletter

For business owners and marketing managers

By Rick Grant

One thing I learned as a reporter was that I didn’t have a story if I didn’t have a good source. Today, that’s more of a guideline than a hard and fast rule, but there are still good reporters out there who want to get their stories from experts in the field. You could be that expert.

It’s not that difficult to do. Just think of a story that the media isn’t telling but should be and write a simple pitch you can send to a journalist. It’s not quite that simple, but it’s not rocket science either.

If you are having trouble finding stories, look at the intersection of your prospects’ challenges and your team’s expertise.

I like to see our PR clients approving one to three pitches each month so we can send them out to journalists, depending upon their industry. If you’re interested in a quick overview of the process, let me know.

Good reporters will be glad to receive your good ideas and it might get you some coverage that can grow your business.

Are You Presenting Your Value Proposition?

Top executives have so many responsibilities that they are often forced to hand down the actual work of selling the company’s offerings to the sales team. This is a missed opportunity.

There are many opportunities for executives to share their company’s brand promise and value proposition by speaking to trade groups and other organizations in the communities they serve. There are many civic organizations, for example, that would welcome a half-hour presentation during one of their monthly meetings.

Many executives, especially those who feel like their public speaking skills could use improvement, are members of Toastmasters International. I am a member of a local Toastmasters Club and have found its methods and the feedback of a group of very supportive peers to be very helpful.
You can find a local Toastmasters Club on this website and attend a group meeting as a guest at no cost. If you do join, you’ll find it very affordable and a great way to practice presenting in public.

Have You Sent Out Your Monthly Press Release?

Readers of this newsletter (and any of my other material) know that I’m a big believer in sending out monthly press releases. They can be powerful tools and I wrote an entire Leader’s Guide to Press Releases to show how I use them.

But I’m not the only one talking about these tools. A recent post from ContentGrip provides 11 great press release examples (plus tips). Good stuff!

If you’re having trouble finding newsworthy topics in your company, reach out to us. After many years working as a journalist, I can find the stories hiding in your company.

We want to give a shoutout to some good friends who have released news during the past month, in case you missed it.

Adding Video to Your B2B Marketing Strategy

We’ve spoken before about using more video in your marketing and touched on it last month in our article on podcasting, much of which is going to video these days. Recently, TopRank published an article about building a video marketing strategy for B2B.

This makes so much sense because on the B2B side, it’s all about building trust and demonstrating that you have a solution to their immediate source of pain.

We highly recommend every client put their executives in front of the camera and, if they don’t feel prepared for that, send them to us for training that will make them more successful.
